Syahriah’s Personal Reflection

March 29th, 2007 by specialtopic in Uncategorized · No Comments

For the beginning, let me introduce myself. My name is Syahriah Salleh. I am 25 years old. I graduated from University Technology
Malaysia in year 2005 in B.Sc Computer Science. I have experience working at TH Technologies Sdn Bhd for 1 year before pursuing my study in M.Sc IT-Management. This is my second semester.

One subject that I have to take this semester is Special Topic IT-Management. To fulfill the synopsis of this subject, PM Wardah asks us to present our own topic in public. After having some constraints, the entire class member agreed to form a committee and invited speakers from Symantec, Redhat and Prof Zamri, CICT Director to share their knowledge on Security Awareness.

My objectives for this seminar are stated as below:

  1. To gain more knowledge in security. What type of awareness we should know to ensure our PC is really protected from viruses, worms and others.

  2. To increase my self-esteem and confident in handling any unexpected incident and work as a team.

  3. To improve my communication skills while interacting with the audiences and speakers have different language and level.

  4. To expose myself to the event management in the real world.

Lesson Learned

From the seminar, or even the class Special Topic itself has teach me some lessons. ‘Don’t worry about failure, worry about chances, you miss when you don’t even try’. The sentence is really suite to our committee especially to our Advisor, PM Wardah Zainal Abidin. Firstly, grateful thanks to her for trusting us manage our own event. With efforts from all members, we finally made it. During the preparation stage, we encounter some problems. We actually lack of time and resources. But thanks to PM Wardah and Dhafer that sponsor our event. One month duration actually is not enough. We change the format after the Mid-term break. The lesson learned from this is, we have to use 5Ps (Proper Planning Prevents Poor Performance). If we change the format earlier, maybe we can get more sponsors and the event will be more grants.

A proverb says “ATTITUDE is a small thing that makes a big difference”. That is what I have experienced after joining the Special Topic class and be part of the committee in organizing a seminar. I am very proud of my lecturer, PM Wardah, who gave us a lot of motivation, and guided us through the whole process of organizing the seminar which we called ‘IT Security Awareness Seminar’. Her guidance was the major factor in making this a complete success, and there is no doubt about it.

Because, ever since the day we were assigned to organize the seminar, we have only one week to do the planning and preparation including drafting out all related tasks and activities for the seminar, inviting speakers, putting up advertisement, preparing drinks and souvenir/gifts and scheduling the tentative program. We were set a target of 50 audiences to attend the seminar. All these would not be executed smoothly and successfully without the guidance from our lecturer and also the professional attitude and high commitment shown by the committee members.

I am very proud of my fellow friends, and colleagues (Azhari, Syahriah, Dhaffer, Akmal, Rahdi, Farhan, Hor, Voo, Zhang and Isnaini) who have striven and worked hard to ensure the success of the seminar. Despite of the pressure of having big responsibility and high commitment, everyone has shown zestful and positive attitude in delivering their work.  Your commitment shines your professionalism and your togetherness shows your solidarity attitude. It has been a great honor to be able to work side-by-side and hand-in-hand with each and every one of you

The most valuable lesson I’ve learned throughout this event; Experience is always the best teacher, because there is only one way where we can learn, and it’s through experience. We may fall and stumble along the way throughout our life, but the falls and stumbles will teach us to get up, walk and move on.

Throughout this event, not only I benefited from the experience of organizing a seminar, I also learned the importance of security awareness in ICT. I also get to improve my communication skills and learned how to interact effectively with different people of different background. I also get to understand one very important thing: to learn something, we have to do the hands-on.

Last but not least, I hope that there will be another event such as this in the near future, organized by the students of Special Topic class, but the improved version! Thank you.

Best regards,

Muhammad Qomaruddin
